A Finished Work of Art

The installation is complete!

Lataja and Ms. Michelle are excited that the installation is complete!

Art in the (Neighbor)’Hood Arts Connection students wrapped up their big project at the end of the month.  The project took weeks of preparation, planning, and great art making.

Keep reading to learn about the group’s creative process and individual artworks.

Alicia + Mariah

Working as a team, art students Alicia and Mariah co-created a Truth or Dare box that encourages audience interaction.

Alicia installs their Truth or Dare art mailbox.

Mariah kneels by the finished piece

Installed directly to the left of the Negley bus stop, their bright box invites people to choose from either the truth or dare side of the box.

The truth side asks the reader a question.  The dare side challenges the reader to perform an action (like jumping jacks).

These students dare you to jump in and get involved with their art!

Truth or Dare

Alexis + Charlie

While planning out her design, Alexis came up with a very creative (and eye-catching) solution.  Drawing from her love of octopi (aka octopuses), she used felt and batting to finish off her advice box.

Notice the transformation…

Before Charlie

From mailbox…

to sea creature…

After Charlie

Thus octopus Charlie was born!

Mikayla with help from Ray

Mikayla found her inspiration from words of inspiration.

Ray and Mikayla writing inspirational messages for Mikayla's art mailbox.

After writings cards and cards of inspirational messages, Mikayla created an art box where people can take an inspirational message while passing by.

Installing Inspiration (with help from the crossing guard)

Just in case passer-bys are subsequently inspired, she installed pen and paper so they can leave a message of inspiration as well!

Installed!

Lataja + Jokes

Lataja also took an inventive approach to creating her box.  Being the jokester that she is, she decided to create a mailbox with funny jokes (and punchlines) for anyone to read and re-share later with friends.

Jokester Lataja poses with her box.

So that makes me wonder…

…why did that lobster blush?

Last but not least…

Cherice!

Cherice!

Cherice took her mailbox idea extremely out of the box.

Instead of personalizing an individualized box, Cherice decided to think big picture.

Ms. Emily helps install the arrows.

Her bright arrows attract attention and give the overall group art installation continuity.

Cherice came up with the idea of using red, orange and yellow yarn to craft large arrow shapes.

In just a couple weeks time Cherice learned and perfected the art of knitting.  With help from Ms. Michelle and Ms. Amanda, Cherice created and installed three attractive arrows.

What We Learned at the Biennial

On the quest for more installation inspiration, Arts Connection students trekked over to the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PCA) to view the Pittsburgh Biennial.

What they found was truly inspiring…

Thanks PCA!

709 North Aiken Avenue… Here We Come!

The Neighborhood Academy is pleased to announce our new location off of N. Aiken Avenue!

Arts Connection student, Jordan, is excited for the new space!

The new school year is off to a fantastic start!  Not only are we enjoying our amazing new arts space (which includes a dark room, ceramics studio, music and dance space, an art display space, and an abundance of natural light), but we are also jumping into this fall’s Arts Connection programming.

This past Tuesday, Arts Connection students and staff visited the Mattress Factory to learn more about installation art.

April 1 Fashion Show – Behind the Scenes

Friday was an exciting day for the Recycled Fashion Design students at the Neighborhood Academy.  The students spent hours preparing for the fashion show, practicing and getting their hair and make-up done – not to mention the hundred of hours they put into designing and creating their looks.

Arts Connection Teacher, Amanda Gross interviews Brittany and Lynell before their big debut.

Thanks to all of those who helped with the fashion show and festival!  The students had a wonderful time and were proud to show off their hard work.

Project Runway, Meet The Neighborhood Academy

You may think you’ve seen Project Runway, but you haven’t seen the real deal until you check out these clips from our Art Connection’s very own Project Runway: The High School Addition.

Students had 55 minutes, a pile of random trash, scissors, staplers, and tape to complete one stunning look, judged by their peers.  Chaos mixed with a whole lot of creativity ensued…

After the whole ordeal students reflected on the experience of how time and pressure influences creative choices.

The students gained valuable information on the ins and outs of interviewing people about their interests.  Soon they will be preparing their own interview questions for future blog posts.  Watch out Pittsburgh!

Thanks Kate for sharing your insight!

Arts Connection 2011 – Blogging + Fashion

Some students in The Neighborhood Academy’s Arts Connection are entering the exciting world of blogging through their Blogging + Recycled Fashion Design class.  The class has divided up into blogging pairs based on their individual interests:

  • Fashion + Hair
  • Fashion + School
  • Fashion + Music

After watching Chris Rock’s documentary film, Good Hair,  students interviewed each other on their reactions to the film and about their own experiences connected to hair and image.

Stay tuned.  More blogging and fashion updates to follow…
