If you’ve been on campus lately, you were most likely greeted by big, bold, brilliant faces on the walls.
The Neighborhood Academy art students have been drawing and painting portraits of themselves and each other using false color and contour lines.

Arts Connection students (and one lucky observer) get in step as they practice for upcoming performances…

Teaching artist, Sandra Moore is busy helping students get ready for the upcoming holiday season. Her classes are making ceramic jewelry as gifts for family and friends.
These ceramic bling pendants will be glazed and fired in time for the winter break.
Mariah (pictured above) is making a pendant for her aunt. Way ahead on her Christmas shopping, Mariah’s already crafted several items for other family members.
Alicia is designing jewelry with herself in mind. She’s making a big letter “A” pendant for her own use.
Sophomore, Kianna likes making the pendants, “because if you mess up you can start over and you can just do whatever you want. You can carve something out or you can draw something on a sheet of paper and then put it on another piece of clay and trace out the shape.”
Arts Connection theater students are working on creating, writing, and staging short works of their own. The student theater troop has been immersed in drama games and warm-ups to hone their theater skills and help them get comfortable on stage.
Last week Tyler, Shakira, and Alexis developed a short skit and improved the action around an important issue they care a lot about – pizza!

Although this month’s featured artist is only in 8th grade, her work is complex.
At the moment, LaTaja upholds drawing as her preferred art medium. She also enjoys painting, spray painting, and dance.
Speaking about the creative process, LaTaja says, “Sometimes I hate the process. I want to quit. But I will go back and finish it and I like what I see afterwards.” She’s learned to “always look at the basic shapes of a picture. That’s what Ms. Sandy taught me.”
This series was inspired by an image in a book on drawing. She freestyled and did her own interpretation of an image of a shell.
Like many artworks, it started off as an accident. Carried away by drawing the original vortex, LaTaja’s shell drawing moved beyond the original image of inspiration.
This series is a good example of how she practices seeing basic shapes in images.
“I think the third drawing is my favorite because it was the one I made a mistake on and it still turned out to be a nice piece.”
